Your Kindness Saved a Life: Baby of Pratibha’s Story

Baby of Pratibha, a fragile 34-day-old male newborn from Faridabad, entered the world through a normal vaginal delivery at a private hospital, weighing 3.1 kg. Though he cried immediately after birth, within 36 hours of life, he developed severe respiratory distress, requiring admission to the NICU.

Despite initial CPAP support, his condition worsened rapidly. By 26 hours of life, he was intubated and started on inotropic support for shock. Owing to his critical state, a decision was made to transfer him to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital for advanced care.

Medical Challenges

During the transfer, the baby suffered a cardiac arrest but was revived with CPR. On arrival at Apollo, he experienced a second arrest, again successfully resuscitated. He required intensive support, including ventilators, inotropic infusions, antibiotics, and management for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and coagulopathy.

Multiple complications followed — including lung collapses, severe infections with Candida, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas, requiring high-end antibiotics, bronchoscopy procedures, and continuous respiratory support. Over weeks of treatment, the baby’s condition remained critical but showed slow signs of improvement.

Financial Challenge

The extensive and prolonged treatment, NICU charges, critical care medications, surgeries, and ventilatory support pushed the estimated cost of medical care to ₹7,89,150.00 — an insurmountable amount for his father, Dharmendra, a modest worker. The family was emotionally and financially shattered, desperately seeking help to save their precious baby.
